It came as a shock to many when the Independent newspaper announced that they are to cease printing and become the first newspaper to go 100% digital. The newspaper which has been printing for nearly 30 years has recognised that the future is digital. In the late 1980s it had a weekday circulation of 400,000 copies, this has dropped dramatically in recent years leading to the decision to become a solely online publication.

It is clear to see that paper is disappearing from all aspects of our daily lives. Letters are now emails, tax disks are paperless, signatures are electronic and diaries are built in to mobile devices.

With many of our business essentials being built into laptops and other mobile devices it is due to habit that people still buy newspapers, not out of necessity or convenience. As the next generation of employees enter the workforce it is important that business leaders acknowledge the shift in priorities and skills amongst generations and recognise that generation z and millennials are the first ever generation to see the world through the lens of technology.

As paper disappears from increasing numbers of industries it is important to reflect this and react in the workplace. A paper free environment not only saves time, money and increases efficiency; it also creates opportunities to work remotely and access documents away from the office. This said, it is important not to be programmed by your computer but for you to dictate the way you work. Processes which are logical for a computer are not necessarily logical for the users.

Volume DMS easily slots into existing office processes. A system that is simple to learn and easy to use yet sophisticated enough to manage the needs of the most complex organisations. Read our recent newsletter to find out more.

Save time and increase efficiency today by moving to Volume.
